American Sign Language 1

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Couse description

Did you know that American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most commonly used language in North America? American Sign Language 1 will introduce students to vocabulary and simple sentences that will enable them to start communicating right away. They will also explore Deaf culture, education, and arts as they learn to view the Deaf community as a people group with unique social beliefs, traditions, history, and values. As they look at this unique language and community through a biblical lens, students will discover the characteristics of spiritual community as well. Students consider the life and career God may be calling them to, as they examine Thomas Gallaudet’s example. They study the characteristics of effective prayer, explore what it means to be “in the world but not of the world”, and recognize Andrew Foster’s contributions to the Deaf community.
