Speech

Course Description:

The skillful use of language is necessary for mankind to live out the Great Commission and the Greatest Commandment. However, the Fall brought about our sinful natures which makes communication with God and others problematic. This course will discover God’s original purpose for communication, explore the ways the Fall has impacted our ability to communicate, and discover ways to return to the way God intended for us to communicate with Him and each other. Students will learn not just the theory, but also the practice of effective communication, including how to share your faith with disbelievers, analyze the speeches of others, build a strong argument, resolve conflicts with grace, and speak with confidence. By the end of this course, students will be able to practice Christ-like communication in a variety of situations.

Biblical Integration:

Creation – All creation is held together by the living Word. God communicates His plan, purpose, and provision personally through the written and living Word and has set patterns and guidelines for human communication. The skillful use of language is necessary for us to live out the Great Commission and the Greatest Commandment.

Fall – Because of the Fall, communication has become cumbersome and problematic. The sinful natures of humans (pride, fear, and arrogance, for example) act as barriers to effective communication.

Redemption – Rather than succumbing to our fallen nature or focusing on forms or subjects of communication that are in opposition to God, we should seek to grow in wisdom through our study and use of languages while allowing the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, bringing our communication in alignment with the person of Jesus Christ. We are responsible to God for evaluating our communication choices by the standards of God’s Word and using them clearly, creatively, and concisely to deepen our relationship with God and neighbor.
